(1916-17) Three Carols- Christmas Song: On this Day- I Saw Three Ships- Masters in This Hall
Holst wrote the Three Carols for amateurs singing in the Thaxted festivals. The carols are all for unison choir with orchestral or organ accompaniment. "On this day," also known as "Personent Hodie" or "Christmas Song," is a setting of words from the Piae cantiones of 1582. "Masters in this Hall" is based on a French carol, yet the text is from William Morris, who added it in the nineteenth century.
